What is Colon Cancer?

Causes, Symptoms, Risks, Screenings

What Does The Colon Do?

Commonly known as the large intestine, the colon forms the final part of the digestive system and is responsible for reabsorbing fluids and processing waste products to prepare for their removal from the body.

How Colon Cancer Starts

Most cases of colon cancer begin with a benign polyp that formed in the colon, but unfortunately was not detected and removed before it turned malignant and spread to neighbouring tissues and organs. This is why regular screenings and early detection are so important.

What Are The Risk Factors?

Age

Age

It occurs most often in people older than 50.

Past Medical History

Past Medical History

Past colorectal cancer, colon polyps previously removed, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), etc.

Family History

Family History

You are more likely to get colorectal cancer if one of your direct family members (parents, siblings, and children) has had the disease before, and the risk increases if they were diagnosed before age 45.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle

Being at a healthy weight, being physically active, not smoking and drinking, and eating healthy, reduces the risk of colorectal cancer.

What Are The Symptoms?

Unfortunately, colorectal cancer in its early stages usually doesn't cause any symptoms. Symptoms tend to only show up in the more advanced stages, and they include:

Abdominal Pain

Dark stools or bloody stools
